Hello Family and Friends!
Well, finally, I have time to figure out how to keep my Kenya ‘journal’ using this blog format! It's been YET another learning curve, but I think I can do it!! I have appreciated and loved hearing from you these past few weeks, whether on FB or email (or Skype!), and I know my responses have been a bit random, as has my experience been here so far!! I apologize for that.
School started the day after I arrived….well, ‘new teacher orientation’ and I must say, they didn’t give us a moment to breathe that first week!! Good planning on the part of the administrators and orientation leaders. The schedule helped me stay focused on ALL the things I had to do to ‘settle in’ as they say here and left little time for jet lag or homesickness to prevail! That said, these first blog posts contain the notes from my first few weeks. I’ll update with more pictures as the adventures unfold.
Feel free to tune in only if you are interested! I am a little more comfortable with this venue these days rather than posting on Facebook, but I'll try to let you know when I add to the blog.
Family 4th of July in Colorado! |
After a summer of a huge list of things to do, fun to have, friends to see, goodbye’s to be said…. the day did arrive and I did actually have to depart. I was doing pretty well handling the emotional part of leaving my home, Stan, friends, school, ….and Snickers, our dog! Doing okay until my brother Gavin called. I answered the call and promptly burst into tears. Gavin is a man of few words (like our Dad ), but his actions always speak for him and the fact that he would be the one to call and say good bye at the moment I had to leave home meant a lot to me. So, of course I wept all the way to DIA, all the way through Security, and most of the first part of the trip to Minneapolis. The emotion of just what it meant to do this ‘Africa adventure’ was a reality, and I could have easily backed out then and there. Stan made the right choice to get me and my suitcases / golf clubs to the Delta baggage person....then he hugged me and was gone.
